Steven Joshua
Steven Joshua is a Melbourne-based contemporary artist whose vibrant and thought-provoking works explore the interplay between imagination and reality. Since his first group exhibition with the Hawthorn Artist Society in 2017, Steven has developed a distinctive style characterised by bold colours, rich textures, and recurring motifs such as soft clouds and structured forms. His palette frequently features hot pink, adding a rebellious yet poignant touch to his compositions.
Steven’s artistic journey includes a 2018 solo exhibition titled “Ambivalence” at Marfa Gallery, where he examined the tension between structure and organic movement. That same year, he expanded his practice by undertaking an intensive plein air course in Florence under Dr. Irene Barberis. In 2022, his solo show “Crossing The Line” at Gallery 550 further showcased his evolving exploration of surreal dreamscapes. His 2023 exhibition “Spielzeit” continued this trajectory, infusing his work with elements of satire and references to religion and high art.
Steven’s art delves into themes of identity, memory, and the human experience, often drawing inspiration from his unique upbringing and vibrant queer identity. His pieces invite viewers to engage with a kaleidoscope of visual delights that challenge perceptions and spark conversation.
Operating from his studio at Swan St Artist Studios in Richmond, Steven continues to create works that resonate with audiences both locally and internationally. His art is available for viewing and purchase through his website and his Instagram account, @stevenjoshua.art.
